Mike Zito Blues from the Southside/Run

Mike Zito -Blues for the Southside

Ok so Monday was a fairly nice day and I decided that I would attempt to start running again. Initially, I planned to walk for 30 minutes but after walking very briefly I started to run slowly. I ran a mile than then walked a half mile then jogged again. Overall, I  covered a little over 2.25 miles in my 30 minutes of running. It was a struggle.

Today was by far the nicest day in a long time. According to The Weather Channel, it was an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10!  A day I couldn’t pass up. Therefore, I decided I would try and run one of my usual 5K courses. I also told myself not to worry about time just complete the run.

Surprisingly, I did just that and was able to keep my average pace under 12 minutes per mile. Accomplishing that made this 70 year-old a happy camper! Here are “ the nerdy details”

Mike Zito on Blues for the Southside

….I have wanted to do a live blues album playing songs from my catalog with my current band for a while now. I wanted to go back to my old neighborhood in South St. Louis to make the recording. That’s where it all began for me, where I fell in love with music. I knew friends and family would fill the Old Rock House and bring the energy I was looking for in this recording.  I wanted Tony Campanella and Dave Kalz to join me as guests. I grew up with both of these guys playing in the scene in St. Louis in the 1990s. They are also both Gulf Coast Records

Final Thoughts

I have been a fan of Mike Zito’s music for a long time and I think this album has very quickly become my favorite Zito album.

The energy that was in the house that night certainly comes through on the album. Zito was in good for  that night both vocally and instrumentally. There is some fine guitar playing on this album.

Now on three tracks  helping out and I’m sure taking lead at some point are Eric Gales (Voodoo Chile), Tony Campanella  (Highway Mama) and Dave Kalz (The Road Never Ends). Of the three, the only name I didn’t recognise was Dave Kalz. Dave’s only album on Spotify is 2019’s Relish, which I need to check out. Which is also what you need to do to Blues for the Southside!

Here’s a three track playlist…..
