So the good thing about running with music, well, two good things. One the music may pick you up and you run faster, or two when you suck and the run seems like it will never end, there’s still the music and since you’re going so slow there’s more of it!! Tonight’s run was the later and here’s the music – I must say that with the iPod on shuffle and almost all my music, well over 8,000 songs on the player, there are now songs that I don’t immediately recognize!
The run started with “Arkansas Traveler/Arch form” by Tim Lake a nice bluegrass album by a talented instrumentalist! Next was a favorite Pete Seeger song “Old Devil Time”. I never bought the album Rainbow Race that this song was on, instead I used to go to the listening station at the Student Union and listen to the album. I loved “The Clearwater”, “Hobo’s Lullaby” and “Old Devil Time” I didn’t recognize this version of the song. At first I thought it was Small Potatoes but I didn’t remember Pete singing being on that track. When I got home I saw it was Kim And Reggie Harris’ version. Next another bluegrass track I didn’t really recognize “Blue Ridge Mountain Range” by Alan Laney another artist whose music I don’t listen to enough. Next a seldom heard song by Slaid Cleaves “Vacationland” from the album Life’s Other Side. Next was a great 9/11 song by Tom Paxton “The Bravest” from Looking for the Moon James Keelaghan “Fires of Calais” was next another artist not listened to enough! From B.B. King’s album 80 came Hummingbird featuring John Mayer. We were in the car the other night going to Princeton and an old B.B King song came on and I said to Nick we knew who that was cause the voice may sound a little different but you can always recognize “Lucille”. Next “Everyday” from the album The Crickets and their Buddies. Then just too slow me down a little more some Wes Montgomery jazz guitar came on “Renie”. The next song I really haven’t heard for years “Lost in Your Hometown” by John Prine’s guitarist Jason Wilber and it sounded pretty good. If I remember right that was the best song on the album of the same name. Jack Ingram followed as I made the turn at the last half mile mark from Live at Adairs “I’ll Catch You When You Fall” a favorite track from a favorite album! Turned and down the home stretch with another unrecognized track “Son’s House” from Guy Forstyh! That song ended the run and the cool down music was from Jack Williams “Big Muddy” from Walkin’ Dreams one of those songs where Jack’s lyrics evoke a strong “sense of place”. All in all the run was slow probably a result of not having run in a week and getting up and being at work the last two days at 7 am with the added bonus of being on my feet outside surveying those days!
Here’s the Tom Paxton Song “The Bravest”
