Well, with three of my four children scattered to the four winds, well at least to the three winds, son three Peter is on his honeymoon with new bride Melissa in Seattle and soon to be on a cruise to Alaska, son two Andrew in the Catskills for a week with girlfriend Meaghan and son one Nick in his apartment, daughter Elizabeth will be an only child for the last full week before she goes back to William and Mary. So unlike my wife who is doing mental handstands at the prospect of never having to cook dinner again. I needed something to cheer me up, nah not really I just wanted to listen to something funny and that’s a good excuse! When I do want to listen to something funny I can listen to a little Steve Goodman’s “Vegematic” or John Prine. How about some Austin Lounge Lizards but no I chose Modern Man, billed as filling the gap between The Three Tenors and The Three Stooges David Buskin, Rob Carlson and George Wurzbach accomplish the task of making me laugh every time I listen to “The Wide Album”.
“The Wide Album” is a live recording of some very funny songs. Actually, that makes it sound like there are some unfunny songs on the album and there aren’t, so I guess it is a collection of funny songs. From the opening song “Don’t You Hate It” (when they make you sing along) to the closing track “I Did It” I love it and laugh every time. Favorite tracks the ones that make me laugh out load include “Moe”, “I’m God”, “Hotline” and “Eggs like These” using Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” the song tells the tale of New Jersey’s banning of runny eggs! “eggs like these baby, they were born to run”
So when I was done listening to the album I sat down on the couch with headphones on and proceeded to fall asleep watching the Dodgers -Giants game listening to Rodrigo y Gabriella. But I was in a good mood because I had a good running week 14 miles (two five miles plus and one four mile) and I listened to Modern Man. So thanks David, Rob and George and if you “hate it when they make you sing along” check this guys out!
